Spring has definitely sprung in Cardiff and it’s the perfect time to get out in the garden. Household collections for garden waste are now happening every fortnight! If your home doesn’t have a green bin but you would like to have garden waste collected from your home, don’t forget to register for a garden sack via C2C on 2087 2087. Taking part in garden waste collections are not the only way to take of the environment whilst taking care of your garden. Check out some of our handy gardening tips…
- Why not try home composting? It’s easy to do and gives you rich, high-quality soil that you can use in your hanging baskets, pots and planters or spread around established plants in your garden. Make sure that you only put organic material in; vegetable and fruit peelings, shredded paper is ok too, but do not put bread or meat into your composter
- Be sure to use secateurs to chop up small branches so that you can fit more into your garden waste bin or bag
- If you have a fruit tree and find that you cannot use all of the fruit, ask friends if they would like to take them for jam-making or home-brewing
- If you have been landscaping your garden and find yourself with several bags of unwanted top soil, do not put these into your garden waste bin; it will be too heavy to move and will not be collected. Try advertising the bags for free collection on classified ad websites or take it to your local recycling centre.
