This weekend the team hit Cardiff Market to try to stop people dropping gum on the streets. We were supported by the Chewing Gum Action Group’s campaign ‘Bin it You Way’, encouraging people to ‘step away from an £80 fine’, if you are caught dropping litter, including chewing gum.
Over the two days we were out, we spoke with around 200 people with many taking the Stubbies and gum wraps to help keep the streets tidy. Everybody we spoke to said that it was great that we were trying to make a difference and it was lovely to have the council presence on the issue. Lots of people were in favour of more enforcement action and welcomed seeing our enforcement officers who were out with us on Saturday, issuing fines.
Jo from Splott said ‘on my walk into work I am always upset by the amount of litter, particularly chewing gum and cigarette ends, and I really hope the campaign will make a difference’. Another local gentleman complimented the city street cleansing team saying they do a fantastic job to keep it as clean as they do, because people have no respect and drop litter all over the place. He hoped that people would respond positively to the campaign and take pride in where they live and work.
We were also treated to a demonstrated of the ‘Gum Machine’ which was great and made a huge difference to the small area cleaned. Unfortunately, gum is very costly and time consuming to remove from the streets and there is so much of it everywhere!
We delivered beer mats and stickers to lots of local pubs with ‘The Borough’ welcoming the initiative. A local Autism Charity also took leaflets and gum wraps and hopes to engage their service users as part of the campaign.
We think that overall the two days were a great success and we hope to build on this with other local events going forward. To find out more, contact the team, at firstname.lastname@example.org
