Love where you live

Love Where You Live (LWYL) is a volunteer and behavioural change project. Its aim is to support volunteers and communities who wish to clean up Cardiff.

Residents of Cardiff love our city and are proud of it. All the help our volunteers provide adds up and makes a big difference to our communities.

This help can include:

Joining your local Community Group for a Litter Pick.
Becoming an individual Litter Picking volunteer.
Becoming a Leave Only Pawprints Champion.
Spreading the good word about our anti-litter campaigns.
Or even reporting issues like fly-tipping to Connect to Cardiff.

Are you interested in helping your local community by litter picking your local area? There are multiple ways in Cardiff to get involved in litter picking. From litter picking as an individual, to joining a group or even getting your workplace involved.

Become a Litter Champion

This Litter Champion scheme is perfect for individuals. Those who would like the option of borrowing litter picking kit on a flexible basis. However, this scheme is not available to groups wishing to borrow bundles of kit. To register for the scheme, get in contact with the LWYL team. You will be provided with a Litter Champion Booklet to read and a registration form.

If you sign up as a Litter Champion, you will:

Be given a LWYL library card. This will give you access to borrow litter picking equipment and pink bags from your local hub/library.
Be able to dispose of the litter in the pink bags next to Council litter bins.
Be provided with health and safety information to keep you and others safe.
Report your litter picking activities. For them to be celebrated and used to plan anti-litter campaigns. This will also give you access to Tempo Time Credits, for more information on the Tempo scheme click here.
Making it simple to get stuck into the rewarding world of litter picking!

Our crews will only collect the pink bags that have been provided for volunteers. They will NOT collect black bags.

Litter Heroes

We run a Litter Hero scheme for any children under 18. As all Litter Champions must be over 18.

When you register as a Litter Champion you can register any children under 18 as a Litter Hero under you. Children registered as Litter Heroes can then earn certificates and prizes. All you will need to do is log their litter picking hours with us.

Group Litter Picks

Community Groups

Are you interested in joining your local community litter picking group? There are multiple groups across the city run by volunteers. The groups are all very welcoming and you can turn up to the majority of their events on the day, no need to book.

Volunteer with a Group or Workplace

Have you got a group of people interested in doing a one-off litter pick event. This could be a charity, guiding/scouting group or workplace. There are a few options to get your group out litter picking.

The most flexible option is to make use of one of the Keep Wales Tidy litter picking hubs across Cardiff. They allow you to borrow equipment for groups for the day or a few days. They also provide risk, assessments and red bags for these group events. To find out more and to find your local KWT Hub click this link.

Raising recycling awareness

Doing your bit to recycle and compost is essential for the city. The Welsh Government has set challenging recycling targets, higher than the targets set in England. The City needs to recycle and compost 64% by 2020, increasing to 70% by 2025.

We would like to thank all those that are working with us to separate their waste for recycling.

All local authorities in Wales could be financially penalised if these targets are not met. This could be as high as £400 000 for every percent missed from these targets. It is in the interests of the tax payer for everyone to play their part and recycle and compost as much of their waste as possible.

Student education

School Litter Picks

The Love Where You Live (LWYL) team offer school visits to all Primary and Secondary schools in Cardiff. We can assist you in taking your class on a litter pick of the local park/area.

What we offer on the litter pick:

To help choose an appropriate location for your class litter pick. This is usually a local park or the school yard.
To complete a risk assessment of the area.
A talk before the litter pick on the topic of litter with the children.
A health and safety briefing with the children before the litter pick.
To bring the appropriate equipment and bags.

What the school must do to prepare for the litter pick:

Provide the number of children expected up front. It is not appropriate to take more than a class of 30 children out at the same time. If you have a larger group, we can discuss options during planning.
Provide the suitable ratio of staff/adults to pupils on the day. The LWYL team cannot be included in the number of supervisors as we will not be there in that capacity.

You may prefer to lead a litter pick yourself or as a regular class activity. If so, you can borrow equipment from the Keep Wales Tidy hubs in Cardiff. The hubs are located across the city and lend out equipment for group activities. Click this link to find your local hub.

Guiding and Scouting

The LWYL team offer a LWYL badge for Scouting and Guiding groups. It is completely free for all units within Cardiff.
